Smoking Ban in Alberta Jails

Oct 4, 2004.

Smoking is no longer allowed in Alberta's prisons. Both prisoners and guards cannot smoke in the prison.

The John Howard Society says the ban on smoking will be tough for smokers.

"It's already stressful for those doing a lengthy sentence and to quit cold turkey makes it even worse." The advocacy group is worried about what punishment inmates may receive if caught smoking.

Some prisoners argue that smoking helps keep the peace inside the prison. After an argument, it is a way for prisoners to calm down. They say that the ban is just going to add on to the tension inside the prison environment.

Alberta is the 7th province to ban smoking inside provinicial prisons.
