Tories launch pilot project to electronically track prisoners on parole, statutory release Aug 18, 2008 Stark Raven Media Collective The Tories are launching a pilot project to electronically track people living on parole. Stockwell Day, the minister of Public Safety, says that the program will target 30 federal “high-risk offenders”. He did not provide details as to how “high risk offender” will be defined. These prisoners who are living in the community either on parole or statutory release will be tracked using ankle bracelets and GPS technology. The program will be launched in Ontario starting in September. The program could be expanded nationally after the one-year pilot period. The pilot project alone will cost about $600,000.This is the same amount of money that it cost to run the safer tattooing pilot program aimed at reducing HIV and Hepatitis C infections in prison. That program was cancelled by the Tories almost two years ago despite research showing that safer tattooing reduces rates of infection.Source Articles: | |||||
