In support of prisoners and prison justice activism in Canada
Ontario Ombudsman receives over 7000 Prison Complaints in 2002-3

The Ontario Ombudsman received over 7000 complaints about Ontario's jails last year (2002-3 fiscal year). The prison complaints were one third of all complaints made to the office. Nearly 40% of the prison based complaints pertained to health-related issues.

In his 2002-03 annual report, the Ombudsman notes that policies and procedures inside prisons are not followed consistently. He re-iterates the importance of the rule of law. He also calls on the Ministry of Public Safety take steps to ensure that humanity and fairness are observed inside Ontario’s jails.
