Jail Riot Leads To More Gear for Guards

Stark Raven News
April 12, 2004.

The only follow up to a riot in a Whitehorse jail is the purchase of more riot gear for the guards.

In January an overnight riot broke out at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre. No one was injured. Eight prisoners were charged with mischief over $5,000 and intent to escape.

According to an investigation done by prison officials, the people involved in the riot were reacting to a drug search by the guards. Other details on the conditions and tensions at the prison were not revealed.

The jail’s main response to the incident has been to purchase helmets, shields and body armour for the guards.

It does not appear that there will be an independent investigation into the riot.
