Guards at Private Prison Ratify First Contract

Prison Guards at Canada's first private prison have ratified their first contract. Guards at the Central North Correctional Centre voted over 80 per cent in favour of the agreement.

The one-year contract expires at the end of December. They has previously voted in favour of going on strike.

The prison guards unionized in Sept 2002, after ongoing complaints about working conditions.

The Central North Correctional Centre (CNCC) opened 2 years ago and is Canada first privately run prison. The 1500 bed superjail is located in Penatanguishine Ontario, is run by Utah-based Management and Training Corporation (MTC).
