In support of prisoners and prison justice activism in Canada
William Head Prisoner-Run Theatre Group Shuts Down

Prisoners involved in a theatre group at William Head Prison have announced the end of the program.   They are citing lack of support from the prison's administration as the reason. William Head on Stage Theatre Society has been around for 23 years and is run entirely by prisoners. William Head is a federal minimum security Prison near Victoria, BC.

The theatre group performed its final production, The Firebugs -- a satire involving arsonists – on November 6, 2004.

Last year the troupe was the subject of a National Film Board documentary called Criminal Acts -- Inside Prison Theatre.

The company is believed to be the only prison troupe in Canada regularly performing for people on the outside.

In 2001, the troupe was reduced to one production a year from two. They received no response from the administration to an Oct 15, 2004 letter requesting a return to a two-play season.
