Lockdown at Nova Women's Prison

June 14, 2004

The Nova Institute for Women continues to be on partial lockdown. The prison was on full lockdown for 3 days last week.

The lockdown came after a tool used for dog grooming went missing.

When there is a lockdown, prisoners are locked in their cells while programs, visits and all activities are cancelled.

The current partial lockdown means that women are now allowed to leave their cells, but access to some areas of the prison remain restricted.

The women's prison is located in Truro, Nova Scotia. It is one of 6 regional women’s prisons built to replace the now closed Prison For Women in Kingston, Ontario.

60 women are currently being held at the prison.
